• Synchronet Easy Setup

    From Vk3jed@DIGDIST/FREEWAY to All on Sat Apr 4 09:34:00 2020
    Hi all, especially net admins.

    A heads up and a query. Rob Swindell AKA Digital Man, the developer of Synchronet is writing an extension that makes it easier for sysops to add new FTN nets to their systems, once they've been given a feed. I have given Rob permission to include my net - VKRadio in this system, and have made provisions to help the script work. Those provisions are a publicly available infopack and echolist (*.na file).

    As I am the FTN gateway for DeveloperNet and MusicalNet, I'm asking whether you, especially the net admins, think this would be something appropriate for these nets, to make it easier for new Synchronet sysops to configure their systems after joining.

    What do you think?

    Depends, what exactly will this new app do?

    From what I understand, it creates a wizard like interface for SBBS sysops, so newly joined sysops can easily setup to connect to the net, autimating the steps one would normally do manually.

    THAT would be a real blessing. So many new sysops seem to be having a real problem with having to use the two different programs to get everything setup. ---

    Yes, it sounded like a great idea. I've made sure VKRadio was submitted. The information needed is basically (off the top of my head)

    Net zone
    Coordinator name
    Hub address
    Fidonet contact
    URL for infopack
    URL for *.NA echolist - it's better to provide these openly for the wizard to grab.

    The only detail I would have to double check is what coordinator they want, since you're the net owner, but I coordinate the FTN side. The rest of the information (with the possible exception of your Fidonet address, if needed) I have on hand, since I setup the FTN side.

    As an example, this is my entry for the wizard.

    [zone:432]
    name = VKRadio
    desc = hobbyist radio communication oriented network
    info = https://vkradio.com/vkradio.zip
    coord = Tony Langdon
    email = vk3jed@vkradio.com
    addr = 432:1/100
    fido = 3:633/410
    dns = ftn.vkradio.com
    echolist = https://vkradio.com/vkradio.na
    areatag_prefix = VK_

    The entry for C=Net might offer a way to list out respective roles. We can certainly talk it over with Rob.

    [zone:64]
    name = C=Net
    desc = CommodoreNet is dedicated to all things Commodore
    info = telnet://necrobbs.strangled.net
    coord = Carlos Roldan
    email = retronet2016@yahoo.com
    fido = 1:322/756
    also = Gary McCulloch at 1:154/50
    addr = 64:500/0
    host = necrobbs.strangled.net
    port = 24556
    echolist = cnetmbone.na
    areatag_prefix = CNT_
