I've actually only been on a train, not counting the Toronto subways,

I have ridden a few trains. One was a train that left the Soo headed

IIRC, the only way to get to some of the places we passed was via rail.
That's true for a lot of places in Canada's North.
There are also quite a few areas where there's no way to get there
over the winter months, mixed with others where you can Only get
there in winter after rivers and such freeze over solidly enough
that you can drive on them..
