I've actually only been on a train, not counting the Toronto subways,
3 or 4 times in my life. I enjoyed it but I just rarely found myself
in a situation where it was the best way to get somewhere.

I have ridden a few trains. One was a train that left the Soo headed northbound towards a very small town with a couple of waterfalls, and then back. I cannot remember the name of the destination now. I meant a very
nice lady from BC on that ride. We were both traveling alone. There are times I wish I had kept in touch with her.

IIRC, the only way to get to some of the places we passed was via rail.

That's true for a lot of places in Canada's North.
There are also quite a few areas where there's no way to get there
over the winter months, mixed with others where you can Only get
there in winter after rivers and such freeze over solidly enough
that you can drive on them..
