    Hi everyone,

On October 18, I am going to teach about amateur radio at a huge (over 1800 acres) Boy Scout camp about an hour west of me called Camp Davy Crockett. Thisis my first time doing this and I'm excited! I'll be
going with two other hams from my ham radio club.

I'd love to help them all get their ham radio license and earn their
    Radio activity badge.

VERY very cool! How did it go?

    Hello, Rob!

Replying to a message of Rob Mccart to SEAN DENNIS:

That's interesting. I would wonder given the multiple ways kids have
to communicate these days, how many would be interested in that.

You'd be surprised. The maker crowd has found out about amateur radio
    and they love it.

I've joined that community, in a way... (not HAM - been there - KM4UXV)
Wife has a laser cutter/etcher, so I've been playing with it. So far
making board game accessories, and not really 'makerspace' as far
    as HAM goes, but possibly...

I will be bringing one of my radio setups alone with my QSL card (postcards we hams send each other to verify contacts) collection
showing a lot of the contacts I've made over the years. I've been a licensed ham since 1997 and am quite proud of it. I also hold the
highest class of amateur radio license available in the US also.

The QSL cards might be cool to them... My first HAM exposure was a teacher bringing his rig to school one day. I am in Tennessee and talked to a guy
in Conneticut, I think it was...

I am not a HAM but I remeber several years ago when my area had a very unusual snow+extreme cold weather event. The HAMs in the area were extremely useful in assisting with emergency efforts. Lots of people
were otherwise without power, phones, etc., but they were able to radio things into authorities.

Had a guy tell me about something similar in Kentucky several years
    ago.

Somewhat OT but a lot of schools are going phone free to prevent kids
from using AI in the classroom.

I work for a school system, and we have done that with the kids,
but not with the staff of course. :-)

... If this were an actual tagline, it would be funny.

There is that.. plus long before AI became an issue, kids were texting back and forth and such during class.

And recording video of teachers or fights... or both...

Have you all noticed a positive difference in how the kids pay attention,
etc.? I would expect one so I am curious.

    I work IT - I don't interact with the kids alot, so I can't
    answer that one...

Too bad in the sense that you cannot answer it, but otherwise good in teh sense that I would really not want to work with the kids of today too often. :O :D

I'm way over in Friendship - just outside Dyersburg. That
    mean anything to you? :-)

Definately too far for VHF, but a buddy showed me his mobile
HF rig today - okay, I need to do that. :-)

After a quick check on Google Maps, it does now.

    My grid square is EM86ti.

I'd say 40 or 75/80 with a NVIS antenna would do nicely.

Yeah - not gonna run out an buy an HF rig - don't really
have the money to just drop on something like that. But
I'm going to start working that way...
