Something like this has to be written for a specific BBS and one that
can support mods like this. You can't just write this that works
with
all systems like a BBS door can.
Why not? It would just need to be passed a directory and resd the
files.bbs
from that directory. Can't all bbs's do that?
Many older DOS BBSes could, but I think others keep a lot of the file info in databases that may or may not be of a standard type -- i.e. they don't use the old-fashioned "files.bbs in separate directories" way of keeping track of their file bases.
For example...
While SBBS keeps each file base in a separate directory, IIRC the actual file info you used to find in the files.bbs files is now all kept in a database.
Mystic and SBBS already have this built-in, so it wouldn't be needed any way.
Most BBS's have the ability of creating files.bbs, so this would work for them. Regardless of whether or not the bbs generally uses its own database. Ele and RA do, but they also have the capability of creating a files.bbs,
which would be ideal for most circumstances and would allow for this project
to be more encompassing than a utility written for a specific bbs. As well,
it could use a .lst file for the tagged files with path/filename to compare
to the displayed files to determine whether or not the file was already
tagged, and to keep histories between directories. Just delete this file each time a user logs in to keep things neat, and keep it in their temporary directory to keep users seperate.
