• WINTER STORM WARNING IN/K

From Barry Martin@454:1/1 to Daryl Stout on Wed Dec 17 10:55:00 2025
    Subject: WINTER STORM WARNING IN/KY

    Hi Daryl!

2-4 inches of snow (started about a half-hour ago) -- if 'safe'
I'll shovel the path for the mailman.
I talked to a fellow ham radio operator in Gaithersburg,
Maryland, and he said he had a tough time shoveling a sloped
driveway, as there was snow on top of a layer of ice from
    freezing rain.

Have that situation every so often here: ground is warm enough to melt
the snow, so the snow melts on the driveway and sidewalks, then freezes
from the coldness of the snow layer above. Ice layer becomes really
slick with snow falling off the shovel while scooping!

We wound up under some sort of extreme cold advisory over the weekend, too.

Our air temps started to tank Saturday night, and got down to 0F by this morning. Yesterday looked sunny and beautiful all day but the temps barely
got above 10F. Supposed to rebound to ~32F today (Monday).

Got about 2" of light fluffy snow. Did end up shovelling early
afternoon: had stopped snowing. Ended up doing the whole job -- once
get started.... Just as well: Sunday was windier and so a much colder
    wind chill.

just above; Thursday upper 40's! (Friday -- brrr!)

Yesterday (Thursday) we had air temperature in the single digits and I
forgot what the feels-like was but rather cold because we had sustained
winds 20+ MPH and gusts to 40 and 45 MPH. Next week we're predicted to
    have near record-breaking highs!

The local TV station I usually watch for news and weather has
occasionally added a map or chart with flight information: generic as in
less than 15 minute delays at the Quad City International Airport (about
five minutes east of me), Chicago/OHare, Detroit, Logan (Boston), etc.
