*** Major Winter Storm for the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes and
    Northeast into Monday ***

FWIW here in the Quad Cities (Bettendorf, Devenport, IA; Moline, Rock
Island, IL) I got a trace of snow. Dubuque (IA) 75 miles upriver got
2"; about 70 miles northwest a major highway into Minnesota is closed
because of several inches of snow but mostly because of the whiteout conditions.

Did have wind gusts of 50+ MPH last night and earlier this morning.

Maybe because now the houses are insulated better? I know this house
(built 1949) originally had single-ply windows and they didn't get
replaced until we did some time in the early 1990's. All of a sudden
    the house was _very_ quiet!

Well this one is definately better built than the last... siding vs.
brick... but I do usually hear the wind banging stuff around outside once
it gets up that high. I have a downspout on one corner of the house that
I have set up as a "break away" because it is going to get blown off at
least once a year, and making it a little easier to come off means it is
    (1) also easier to reinstall, and (2) it is a lot less likely to tear
anything else off when it blows off.

Reminds me of what my Anatomy instructor would say when we asked about inconsistencies: "don't fight it, join it!".

To me makes sense to have your gutter that way: when it breaks off you
can have it break at a convenient spot (like a seam), and doesn't tear away/damage other portios of the gutter, downspout, etc.

Tangent to your gutter: back in my teenage years had an electronics
bench area in Dad's work room. At the time electrical service via 20A
fuse. I don't remember if I ever blew the fuse but was thinking if I
did it's going to be real dark in the basement! What I did was wire the outlets after a 15A fuse -- the light was before the 15A fuse (both on
the 20A circuit) so if I blew the 15A the outlet power would go off but
    the light would stay on.
