    Having watched a show or two shot there over the years, I would say it is
    the beauty of the area and maybe sometimes the weather (although it looked
    like they got plenty of rain).

    I hear the lakes and mountains are a pretty good sight.

    They are, though be warned that large parts of Tongariro national park (which contains some of the aforementioned mountains in the form of mostly not active volcanoes) is closed due to recent bush fires :(

    There are plenty of other lakes and mountains to see especially down in the south island though.
