• American oil giants aren't eager

Trump says that American oil giants will invest billions in Venezuela. The signals the CEOs are sending are quite different. They aren't eager to take enormous financial risks, even though 78% of Venezuela's oil is already under contract with China.

Trump can say that contracts are worthless, but these companies don't want to risk losing contracts elsewhere in the world because they don't honor existing ones.

Moreover, the question remains what kind of government will emerge in Venezuela. Will it be stable enough to make investments sufficiently safe?

At the moment, the US has absolutely no say in Venezuela. The US can bomb as much as it wants, but that doesn't mean you have that country under control.

While Trump may be naive, the CEOs of these companies certainly aren't. They are, however, afraid of Trump's whims.
