put Mint on her old laptop so she can start getting ready... if I give

Windows includes Linux now, so there's really a very low barrier to entry (cost-wise, at least).
And that's about the best thing you can say about WinLinux. I've played with it and it was more frustrating than Arch or Gentoo.

Or would you just rather boot into something similar to Windows and
have everything done for you via mouse click? Then I could see the argument. *shrug*

It's not that I'm that much of MSFT hater but it's cool when regular computer users try to adopt Linux and stay comprehensive about it. I
keep my fingers crossed.
I've been distro hopping for a few months now. I have tried arch btw ;0
Currently my desktop is running Linux Mint. It's been stable, the box
runs Jellyfin for our media, and other then that it's my gaming rig.
This laptop is currently dual booting Fedora and Win11. The win11
install is for BBS stuff (Until I get off my ass and configure HPT).
I think I'll be going all in with Fedora on both the machines as for me
it is working great and I wanted to go back to KDE for the desktop as
it's the one I prefer.
My arch review was pretty simple. As you said it was not hard to
install, it was fast etc. I don't have anything bad to say, I just
didn't like the pacman command lines. Yes that's a crazy reason to move
to another distro, but at this point in my life I want to at least like using my own computers. (At work for 8 hours a day I'm stuck with a
highly locked down windows 11).
I think it might be time to have some work/play separation and install
Linux at home. :)
Me personally, I have nothing bad to say about Mint. I've booted it up multiple times, and it looks and works great.
BBS stuff? I thought you were done with that? Or are you just
referring to your QWK packet stuff?
don't think I could ever run anything Red Hat related, but to each
their own, of course - and that's probably because I'm just not used
to it or it's package manager.
It's pretty amazing, to say the least. Also has a GUI package manager
that not only updates the dotfiles when needed, but runs pacman for
you without the need to type it in a console. ;)

Bah, you've been saying that for months already. Just stick with
Windows ya 'kid in a candy store'. LOL :)
It does. One of the reasons I am not moving too fast to re-install that machine, I do have an image backup made weekly just in case.
Although in the background I've been quietly coding my own BBS
software on the commodore 64. Lost my original code due to a bad
floppy so re-creating it from the data disk.

LOL I just can't get used to the command lines for that one. I use
the terminal for this stuff on Mint and fedora, but pacman is causing a mental block.

In all fairness, I'm running Bodhi Linux on one laptop and Mint on the other.
I think as long as you're not using proprietary graphics drivers and
are using the open source ones, you should probably be fine. But yeah, backups are always a good idea.
Sounds fun. Do you actually have a commodore64? I don't think I've
ever seen you talk about it.
apt install <package>
yum install <package>
pacman -S <package>
Meh, all the same. I completely get it, though. Once you get well
aquainted with one of them, others get confusing. lol
I've got 2 64's, and a 128 here. 1541, 1541II, 1541C and 1571 drives.
LOL One of the 64's was mine from age 13-18 when I sold it to a friend
who years later gave it back with his. So every one of the computers
and drives here I used as a teenager. LOL
I will share videos of this when I'm done. Friend of mine is 3d
printing some of the parts for me and helping me design everything.
(Same friend who gave me the commodore's back over 10 years ago!)
pacman -S <package>
Why -S ? That's what bothers me. Must be capital S. WHY!?!?!?
Why not -install or -i like everything else? Hell -fetch what is -S?

It syncs the repository first, before installing the package.
Then there's more options you can use with -S, for example "-Syu"
Wow. Sounds like you have a whole operation going over there!

to stick with what I'm used to and like, though, and Arch has been
just that for well over a decade now.
Nice collection.
Because it has to be different. That's
how you know it's special.

yeah but shouldn't it do that anyways? why add another step when you
don't need to. i know why, because of their train of thought.

I'm not sure what you mean here. There was no step added. Sync'ing
your repo, installing a package or packages, updating your system,
Either way, I'm not here to argue about it, or tell you what is
better than the other. There's so many distros available nowadays,
